Just back from a trip to Kani Maldives.

The Dhiraagu Prepaid SIM card now costs rf30 (usd$2.0) with a credit of rf20 (usd$1.30) inside. You can choose between mini or micro sized SIM card. The SIM card can be purchased at the Dhiraagu shop outside airport. But the shop will be closed from 1am to 7:30am daily and also closed on friday from 11am to 2:00pm for friday prayer. Top up extra value at the Dhiraagu shop in order to use Prepaid SIM card to call home cheaply or to activate the mobile internet acess package.

Mobile Internet is already activated by default on the SIM card but it cost 1 laari (USD0.06) per Kilobyte of data downloaded or uploaded, which can very quickly drain the value in the SIM card. To activate the 1GB mobile internet access plan, you have to top up at least rf160 into the SIM card, put the SIM card into your Smartphone and send an sms to 445 with the content ADD GB1. A SMS will be send to your phone to acknowledge that the 1GB access plan is activated. The internet access will be valid for 30 days (till 23:59 of the 30th day).

The APN required for internet access is as follows. Somehow, the SIM card does not know how to automatically update the APN settings into my Galaxy S2 Smartphone and I have to do it manually for internet access to work.
APN: internet.dhimobile
WAP Gateway:

Please note that If you enable teethering on your smart phone, the Prepaid SIM card will NOT be able to receive any incoming phone call. Receiving Incoming phone call to your Dhiraagu Prepaid SIM is free. To call international, the following International call charges applies.

To call Dhiraagu Customer Service, dial 123 if you are already in Maldives (no charge if you are in Maldives). Alternatively from outside Maldives, you can call Customer Care: +960 3338887 (when dialing from overseas, you will be charged) or mail to Dhiraagu at

Deactivate voicemail service by sending an SMS to 444 with the content DEACTIVATE VOICEMAIL. This will prevent your friends or relative from wasting their IDD call charges trying to call you on the Maldives prepaid SIM number. This is because if you happen to be teethering your phone or happen to be in a blind spot where there is no cellular network signal, by default, the call will be answered by the voicemail service within 20 seconds, and your caller will have to pay the IDD charges since the call is answered. I rather prefer that my friends and relative gets an "engaged" tone than to waste their money.

I bought 1 mini SIM for my Galaxy S2 and 1 micro SIM for my wife iPhone4. Both SIM activated with 1GB internet. We had lots of fun using the mobile internet for WhatsApp, Viber and calling each other using the Voice network. Performance of Internet depends on location. Open space gets better performance about 300k to 1MB download. Night-time the download can be slowed down to 100-300k.

I hope all this infomation helps. If u require more information, email me at wisdom208 at
